SMD & MCOB Difference?

What’s the difference between SMD and MCOB ?

Here is the briefly introduction from the Encapsulation, Heat dissipation, Lumens efficacy, Stability and Prices.

1、Encapsulation

2、Heat dissipation

Compared to SMD, MCOB technology has better thermal conductivity with less Thermal Resistance.

Which means the heat can be spread directly from the chips. Making better heat dissipation and lower Lumens depreciation.

SMD--------Surface mounted chips

MCOB------ Mounted dies in the optical cups embedded on board.

Optical cups gives more angle for the light coming out.

Without lumens loss by the surface glue.

In the market,most of SMD products can reach 70-100lm/w.

However,MCOB can reach 120-160lm/w.

MCOB Bulb Light is 100-110lm/w, MCOB Light Tube T8 is 120-130lm/w.

3、Stability

SMD is consist of 8 parts:

① Primer ② holder ③ welding spot ④ copper foil ⑤ insulating layer ⑥ aluminum substrate

⑦ glue ⑧ cover

MCOB is consist of 3 parts:

① Primer ② aluminum substrate ③ cover.

For a product, it’s easier to get something wrong when with more parts included.

In SMD,if only one of the 8 parts doesn’t work, the SMD LED will fail.

In MCOB, 3 parts only. We just have to make sure the 3 parts work well.

So in this case,MCOB is more stable than SMD.

Now you can buy the LED products at any price you want in the market.

Yes,SMD is popular now due to the cheap and diverse prices.

However, COB,M-COB is the trend in the further market.
